Winsweep's Hubris, Explained: How the Server's Protector Became Its Antagonist

Winsweep does not arrive as a villain. He arrives as a contractor.

He debuts running a hitman service — a mercenary in a server full of people with grudges, which is decent business. Then he gets attached to the place. He learns the server's history, decides it's worth protecting, and appoints himself the one to do it, specifically against doctor4t. Diansu, holding Bonesburrow after the Battle of Bonesburrow, gives him administrative control of it.

So by the start of this arc he has a cause and a jurisdiction. What he doesn't have yet is a wound.

The wound

Two of them, actually, and they arrive close together.

The first is physical. Luxintrus has been suffering episodes where she loses control of her body. During one of them she tears out Winsweep's right eye and damages his mask. She isn't in control when it happens, which matters to the reader and not at all to the man missing an eye.

The second is the Airship Expedition. doctor4t organises a voyage aboard the Freebird, ostensibly to survey new structures, actually to lure out the figure that's been following him since Bonesburrow and blow it up. The figure obliges by revealing itself — not the ghost everyone assumed, but an entity called Mouthpiece. doctor4t and Astronyu bail out; the ship goes up over the wilderness.

Luxintrus and Winsweep hunt doctor4t down afterward and kill him. Winsweep takes Rattenheim. doctor4t exiles himself to the Log Cabin with Astronyu, having lost everything.

Winsweep won. That's the part worth sitting with. He got the outcome he wanted and it broke him anyway — the betrayal convinces him he can't actually protect the server, and he starts to come apart.

The Split

Meanwhile Mouthpiece kills Luxintrus, and her mask breaks.

Noxintrus splits off from her, appearing alongside her when they respawn. Not a possession, not an alter — a second person, standing there. Noxintrus goes to ground in Oceana and starts building an investigation against doctor4t.

This is the arc's structural masterstroke. Luxintrus's loss of control gets externalised into someone who walks around making their own decisions, and those decisions are consistently the ones Luxintrus won't make. Later, when Noxintrus uses the Broken Lesser Divinity on doctor4t because Luxintrus refuses to, the split pays off exactly.

The Masquerade

Winsweep hosts a party.

The plan is to poison everyone who sided with doctor4t at Bonesburrow, establish control, and take the server. To get the guest list he manipulates Luxintrus into naming names.

doctor4t crashes it. With Luxintrus and SillviaTV, he kills Winsweep. A lot of people die in the crossfire — including Diansu, who comes back from it with an idea and takes it to Viceroy Boolean: an Oceanan world government. The war that consumes the next arc is conceived at the party where Winsweep tried to seize power and failed.

Winsweep retreats to the wreck of the Freebird and starts building Smilies 2, hallucinating doctor4t and Luxintrus while he works.

The Anchor

The arc's strangest sequence, and the one that gets quoted most.

Folly brings Nautilux to Guramont — a Luxintrus from an aquatic alternate universe. She passes down the L'Ancre, which turns out to have been forged in a distant world by that world's doctor4t and Diansu, for that world's Luxintrus.

Before Nautilux goes home, she and Folly both say the same thing: doctor4t will bring the end of the server, one way or another.

Then there's the sea slug. Talon finds one in Guramont that resembles doctor4t and gifts it to him, mentioning that it talks about the end of the world. It's the doctor4t of Nautilux's universe, left behind in the exchange. Somebody's counterpart is now a pet, and nobody does anything about it.

The Manhunt

Zombiedwarf organises an ambush on Winsweep. Winsweep escapes it, shelters in Bonesburrow, and finds a hidden chamber holding a book of coordinates. Luxintrus catches him on the way out, and the two of them follow the coordinates to Mouthpiece's Lair.

Luxintrus tells him not to. He does it anyway: he bargains with Mouthpiece for the Lesser Divinity.

He tests it on a pig. Then he goes back to the ambush party. Only Zombiedwarf and Voidiable are left to fight him, and they lose — permanently.

Afterward he leaves a compass at the Log Cabin for doctor4t and Luxintrus, pointing at the two gravestones, with a letter.

This is the hinge. Up to here Winsweep is a damaged man with a defensible position. After it he's someone who traded with an entity, over an explicit warning, and used what he got to permanently erase two people.

Markhett, and the fish

Luxintrus throws a festival for Markhett's grand opening. It's a genuine celebration and also a trap, stocked with seventeen warden heads sourced from EightSidedSquare.

Winsweep walks into the Vault and dies in it.

It's not the death that does the damage — deaths are cheap here. It's the humiliation. So he starts taking her things, one at a time, beginning with her pet fish, Jemmie.

That detail is the whole arc in miniature. The man who arrived with a professional grudge and a cause ends it stealing a fish to hurt someone. He keeps escalating for arcs afterward, and Jemmie keeps coming up — used as leverage during an interrogation, eventually released into the ocean by Luxintrus specifically so he can never be used against her again.

What it sets up

Winsweep leaves this arc with the Lesser Divinity, a working alliance with Oceana ahead of him, and a personal vendetta that has entirely replaced the cause he started with. Noxintrus leaves it with a case file and no scruples about using it.

Both of those go off in Unchecked Decline.
