The End Portal Secret: The Portal Saga, Start to Finish
The Portal Saga is the longest thread on Content SMP. It opens in the server's first hours and doesn't close until the fourth arc, and for most of that time almost nobody knows it's a thread at all.
The opening move
The server starts. RAT sets out to destroy every End Portal on it.
He destroys two. The third is left intact, and its existence is hidden from everyone except Astronyu.
That's it. That's the whole setup — a lie of omission told in the opening minutes, to a server that has no reason yet to be suspicious of anything.
What makes it work as a plot device is that nobody investigates for years. The portals are gone, the End is closed, everyone gets on with their conflicts. The secret sits underneath four arcs of unrelated violence.
Why Astronyu
The choice of confidant matters more than it first looks.
Astronyu is at the Battle of Bonesburrow on the other side — he recruits defenders for The Mason. Then he trades away The Mason's defences in exchange for protection from "the entity that comes after the Mason's demise." He is, demonstrably, someone who changes sides when the terms are right.
And he never gives up the portal. Not at Bonesburrow, not through the Haunting, not through the whole of Winsweep's Hubris. He holds it until he is kidnapped and interrogated for it, and even then the interrogation doesn't produce the truth.
Whatever else Astronyu is, he's the most reliable person in the story on the one thing that mattered most.
The investigation
The thread reactivates through Noxintrus.
After The Split, Noxintrus hides in Oceana and starts building a case against RAT. That investigation eventually narrows onto the End Portals, and Noxintrus works through the server methodically — Moriya, Diansu, Talon, Eight and Asai all interrogated on the matter.
None of them know. They can't. Two people know, and one of them is RAT.
So Noxintrus and Winsweep move to Astronyu, as a long-standing ally of RAT's, and kidnap him from the Log Cabin.
The interrogation nobody wins
RAT and Luxintrus see the kidnapping and follow the pair into the basement of Smilies to listen in.
Luxintrus gets caught and dies. She comes straight back and keeps watching.
The discussion moves to Rattenheim to check Astronyu's story against physical evidence. Astronyu is released. Winsweep and Noxintrus stay behind, sensing they were followed, unable to confirm it.
Then Luxintrus and RAT go through Noxintrus's own hidden room — behind a painting in Oceana's library — and read the case that's been built. She very nearly gives herself away putting the painting back.
The reveal
Seeing the evidence assembled properly, Luxintrus turns on RAT. She tells him she needs full honesty if she's going to be his ally.
He goes vague. Then he takes her to Rattenheim and shows her the third End Portal, in perfect shape.
Four arcs. An investigation, a kidnapping, an interrogation, a dead spy who came back to keep spying. And the answer was in a hidden room in the stronghold RAT had been living in since the first arc — the same building where he and Moriya found the enchanted books that became Enchancement.
The weaponisation
Now that Luxintrus knows, the secret stops being a liability and becomes a trap.
She lies under interrogation at Smilies — after Winsweep threatens Jemmie to force her cooperation — giving a partial truth about the portals plus one fabrication: that RAT and Astronyu have been making trips to the End for resources, and that she'll let Winsweep and Noxintrus tag along next time.
They take it. Two days later they follow her through the portal and spend six months in Neverend.
The lie told in the server's opening minutes becomes the mechanism that removes Oceana's fighting strength and opens the window for The Revolution.
The disclosure
The saga closes at The Vote.
Winsweep, back from Neverend, exposes the End Portal secret to the public. A vote is held on whether he lives or dies by Charter.
He is voted to live.
So the secret ends the way it does on a server like this: not with a confrontation, but with a disclosure used as leverage in a political manoeuvre, in a vote the discloser wins.
Why it works
The Portal Saga is the best-constructed thread on Content SMP because it is genuinely planted. It isn't retconned in — it's there in the first arc, one line, easy to miss, and every later development is consistent with it.
It also functions as a character argument about RAT. His defining trait is keeping things from people, and this is the purest instance: a secret with no immediate benefit, held for years, that indirectly causes a kidnapping, an interrogation and a six-month imprisonment.
He finally tells someone, and it immediately becomes the most useful thing he owns.
