The Anchor and Nautilux: Content SMP's Multiverse Episode, Explained

The Anchor is the strangest sequence on Content SMP, and it's doing three jobs at once: introducing an artefact, delivering a prophecy, and leaving behind one of the bleakest jokes in the story.

The handover

Folly — doctor4t's second character — brings Nautilux to Guramont. Nautilux is a Luxintrus from an aquatic alternate universe.

When Luxintrus arrives, Nautilux passes down the L'Ancre.

They talk about each other's worlds and about the anchor, and Luxintrus learns where it came from: a distant universe where RAT and Diansu forged it for that universe's Luxintrus.

Sit with that for a second. In some other version of this server, RAT and Diansu — who in this one are on opposite sides of a war that ends with Diansu permanently dead — worked together to make something for Luxintrus.

The multiverse framing isn't decoration. It's the story quietly showing you the version where these people cooperated, and then handing you back the one where they don't.

The warning

Before Nautilux is returned to her world, she and Folly both confirm the same thing:

RAT will bring the end of the server, one way or another.

Two sources, independently. And one of them is doctor4t's own second character.

That's an unusual thing to construct. doctor4t is playing both the man being warned about and one of the two people delivering the warning. It reads less like foreshadowing than like a confession filed in advance.

The warning isn't resolved in this arc, or the next. It's still open at the end of the fourth.

The sea slug

After Nautilux disappears, Luxintrus seeks out RAT to train her on how to use the L'Ancre.

And in Guramont, Talon finds a sea slug that looks like RAT and gifts it to him, mentioning that it talks about "the end of the world."

It is the RAT of Nautilux's universe, left behind during the exchange of the anchor.

So: a whole other doctor4t — a person, from a world where he and Diansu built things together — is stranded here as an animal, is given to his own counterpart as a pet, and keeps saying the world is going to end. Nobody does anything about it.

It's played as a curiosity. It is, on any reading, horrifying.

What the L'Ancre becomes

The anchor recurs, and mostly as something taken from her.

During The World's Faire and its aftermath, Noxintrus steals her L'Ancre — part of the same stretch where Winsweep holds Jemmie hostage and threatens to burn down the Log Cabin, forcing Luxintrus to give the fish back up.

The artefact handed down from a version of herself, forged by two people who in this world became enemies, ends up as another item on the list of things Luxintrus loses.

Why the episode matters

Three reasons.

It's the only outside perspective in the story. Everyone else's opinion of RAT is shaped by having been killed, betrayed or lied to by him. Nautilux has no stake here and reaches the same conclusion.

It establishes that the Luxintrus/Noxintrus split isn't unique. Nautilux is a third version. The Split is presented as the trauma of a broken mask; The Anchor quietly implies the multiplicity is more structural than that.

It's the story's only glimpse of an alternative. Every other scene on Content SMP is people escalating against each other. This one contains a world where RAT and Diansu forged something together for Luxintrus — and the only piece of that world we actually meet is a sea slug that won't stop talking about the apocalypse.
